Dr. Sylvia Earle is known around the world as a distinguished oceanographer, marine biologist, author, lecturer, and scientific consultant. Dr. Earle is currently the "voice for the oceans" for SeaWeb, the co-founder and Director of Deep Ocean Engineering, Inc., Chairman of Deep Ocean Exploration and Research, and a Research Associate at the Smithsonian Institution. Formerly Chief Scientist of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, she presently serves on the board of Dresser Industries, Inc., Oryx Energy, Inc., and various non-profit organizations including the World Resources Institute, the Center for Marine Conservation, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the World Wildlife Fund, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and the Divers Alert Network.

Dr. Earle, a National Geographic Society explorer-in-residence, has led more than 50 research expeditions, logged some 6,000 hours underwater, and is currently directing the Sustainable Seas Expeditions, a 5-year exploration of the nations twelve National Marine Sanctuary. The Deep Rover, a one-person submersible with a capacity to dive to 2000 feet, will be used during this expedition.
